 On 16 july 1944, air echelons of the 95th, 96th and 97th Squadrons left England for Italy via North Africa. Based at Ombrone airfield near Grosseto on the west coast of Italy, the 440th TCG lifted 720 paratroopers of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team on the 15th of August, and delivered them to Le Muy, about 20 miles inland from the coast of Southern France.
Albatross Mission - Serial #6, built of 45 planes from the 440th Troop Carrier Group, dropped its troops at 04:35 on DZ "A".
Upon return to Ombrone, aircraft were refueled, crews briefed and a second run to Le Muy was made towing gliders containing elements of the 602nd Field Artillery Battalion. Dove Mission - 48 planes in serial #19 to LZ "O" at 18:35.
